Ingredients for the Best Margarita
You’ll need just a few simple ingredients to make the best strawberry margarita at home! You can find the full list of ingredients and written instructions in the recipe card below.
- Limes – freshly squeezed lime juice is key for making this drink! I use about 20 limes to make a full pitcher.
- Strawberries – I love to use fresh strawberries but frozen, thawed berries will work in a pinch.
- Tequila – both blanco (silver) or anjeo tequila will work great for this recipe. Go for a good quality tequila – it makes a huge difference!
- Triple Sec – also known as orange liqueur (Cointreau or Grand Marnier).
- Margarita Salt – for garnishing the edges of your margarita glasses.
- Sugar Syrup – you can use agave syrup (my favorite), maple syrup or honey for sweetening the margarita.

Making the Strawberry Syrup
I always make this strawberry margarita with a fresh strawberry syrup. To make sure the strawberries stay uniformly mixed in the drink instead of clumping at the top, I cook my pureed strawberries first, then let the mixture cool.
- Wash and dry, then remove the leaves and quarter the strawberries. Place the quartered strawberries into a food processor, along with the sugar. Adjust the sugar to taste; omit the sugar when using extra sweet berries.
- Pulse the strawberries into a smooth puree. You can also do this using a blender. Pour the strawberry puree into a medium sized saucepan.
- Bring the puree to a simmer over medium heat on your stovetop. Simmer the puree for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the syrup from the heat, transfer into the refrigerator and chill completely.
You can make this strawberry syrup up to 2 days ahead of time. Just keep it chilled in the refrigerator.
How to Make a Strawberry Margarita
Here’s how I make this incredible margarita!
- I highly recommend using fresh lime juice! Squeeze the juice from 20 to 25 limes and strain out the seeds. Pour the lime juice into a large margarita pitcher.
- Next, measure out the tequila, triple sec (orange liqueur), and agave syrup. Pour those into the pitcher. Add in the chilled strawberry puree next.
- Add about 1 cup of quartered strawberries and a few sliced limes into the pitcher, along with several cups of ice.
- Stir everything together and serve immediately!
Serving Suggestions
Once you add the ice into your margarita, it should be enjoyed right away. If you want to prepare the drink ahead of time, simply combine all the ingredients in the pitcher, except for the ice. Place the pitcher into your refrigerator and chill. When ready to serve, simply add ice.
