Ingredients for Easy Apple Cobbler
Here are my tips for the main ingredients you’ll need to make this apple cobbler. Find the full list of ingredients in the printable recipe card below.
Jump to Recipe- Apples – just about any variety of apples will work great for this recipe. Some of my favorites are Gala, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. Peel the apples for the best texture.
- Cinnamon – a must for this recipe! I also like to add a touch of nutmeg, but that’s optional and can be left out if you don’t like the flavor.
- All-Purpose Flour – regular flour works best for the buttermilk biscuits. If you need to use a gluten-free flour, try a GF baking flour mix.
- Buttermilk – this rich, slightly sour milk works best for the biscuits, as the acid reacts with the baking soda, making them extra fluffy.
- Unsalted Butter – I always recommend using unsalted butter for baking recipes. This gives you more control over the salt content in the recipe.
- Vanilla Ice Cream – I love classic vanilla ice cream to serve with this cobbler. Caramel or even pecan ice cream will also taste fantastic!

Preparing for the Recipe
This apple cobbler recipe is so easy, you can have it in the oven in no time! Here’s how to get things started:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Prepare a medium-large sized casserole pan for the recipe, about 9×13-inches in size.
- Wash and pat dry the apples for the filling. Cube the butter needed for the buttermilk biscuits and place it into the freezer to chill.
Preparing the Apple Filling for Cobbler
Let’s make the apple filling for this cobbler recipe:
- Peel the apples first, then cube them into small chunks, about ½-inch in size. You don’t want the apple chunks to be too big or too small.
- Place the apples into your casserole pan. Squeeze a few tablespoons of fresh lemon juice over the top.
- Next, add the sugar, vanilla extract, salt, all-purpose flour, cornstarch, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Use a spatula to toss everything together until the apples are well coated and no dry flour remains.
- Cube the ¼ cup butter into tiny pieces and drop the butter over the apples evenly.

Making Cobbler Buttermilk Biscuits
Once you have the apple filling ready, it’s time to make the cobbler biscuits. These are so light and fluffy! There are a couple of different ways you can prepare these.
- For the biscuits, combine all the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. You can use a food processor or do this in a large mixing bowl.
- Next, add the cold butter. If using food processor, simply pulse the butter and dry ingredients together until a crumbly mixture forms.
- You can also use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour. Alternatively, you can grate the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a cheese grater. Just toss the grated butter with the flour.
- Next, add the buttermilk and vanilla extract to the mixture. Use a spatula to combine everything together, just until the biscuit batter is uniform.
- Drop large dollops of the biscuit batter over the apple filling. Sprinkle the top of the biscuits with sugar crystals, if desired, for extra texture.
Baking Instructions for Apple Cobbler
Bake the apple cobbler at 375°F for 40 to 45 minutes. After 20 minutes, gently lay a sheet of foil over the casserole dish to prevent the biscuits from burning.
Bake until the apples are cooked and tender and the biscuits are golden brown. The apple mixture will be bubbling around the edges.

Serving Suggestions for Apple Cobbler
The apple cobbler filling will be extremely hot just as you remove it from the oven! Allow the cobbler to cool for about 20 minutes before enjoying.
I recommend serving this apple cobbler warm, with or without vanilla ice cream on the side. Whipped cream is also a great option.
Keep any leftovers covered and stored in the refrigerator.
