Ingredients for Apple Tart Recipe

Here are the main ingredients you’ll need to make this stunning apple butter apple tart!

  • Apples: I recommend using a tart, crispy variety of apples for best results. Gala, Honey Crisp, or Granny Smith will work well.
  • Butter: for baking the homemade pie crust
  • Flour
  • Cinnamon & Nutmeg: for flavoring the apples!
  • Apple Butter: you can use store-bought apple butter, or make a batch of homemade apple butter.

How To Make the Tart Crust

Besides the filling, the most important part of any pie or tart is the crust of course! Making the perfect all-butter pie crust can make or break any tart recipe. For my apple tart recipe, I make my crust with 100% butter because it makes the crust extra flaky and flavorful. Here are a few tips for making the perfect pie crust!

  • Use COLD butter! This is super important, otherwise the dough will not turn out well. I cut my butter into small cubes, place it into the freezer for 30 minutes until it’s super cold.
  • Handle the butter and dough minimally. Use a food processor for breaking the butter into the flour. Avoid touching the dough unless necessary. The heat from your hands will soften the dough.
  • Let the dough rest and chill! Once you have the dough ready, wrap it well and place it into the fridge for a good hour. This will allow the butter to chill and the dough to rest. Unrested dough will be hard to roll out and it will shrink in the oven while baking.

How to Make an Apple Tart

There’s something very special and nostalgic about apple pie! The aroma is simply mouth-watering! For this apple tart with apple butter, I wanted to incorporate those incredible flavors, in a concentrated form. I add pecan apple butter, which is like pureed apple pie filling in a jar. Apple butter is seasoned with all the spices, too!

  1. Prepare the pie crust for the tart first. It needs to chill for about an hour. After chilling, roll it out and arrange it in a 9-inch tart pan.
  2. Apple Butter: Try this recipe with my ‘Homemade Apple Butter’ recipe! It’s super easy and delicious!
  3. For the filling, first spread the apple butter evenly over the tart crust. Using a sharp knife or mandeline slicer to cut the apples very thinly. To arrange the apple slices, fan out 5 to 6 slices at a time and arrange the slices starting from the edge of the tart, working your way in.
  4. Prepare the seasonings in a small bowl: combine the lemon juice, cornstarch and spices. Sprinkle the sugar over the apples, then use a pastry brush to brush on the spices.
  5. Bake the apple tart in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, until the apples are softened and golden brown. Remove the tart from the oven and let it cool for 15 to 20 minutes before serving. Enjoy with a side of vanilla ice cream or spiced whipped cream.

Ingredients

For Pie Crust:

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold
  • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup cold water

For Filling:

  • 1 cup apple butter
  • 3 to 4 large apples, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp corn starch
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp EACH: nutmeg, all-spice
  • sprinkle of ground cloves
  • 2 to 3 tbsp sugar

Instructions

For the Tart Crust:

  • Prepare the crust first. This can be done even a few days in advance. Cube the butter into small pieces, place into the freezer and chill for 20 to 30 minutes until ice cold. Place the butter into a food processor, along with the flour and salt. Pulse the butter and flour together for a few minutes until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  • With the food processor running, add the cold water and mix until a dough ball forms, about 30 seconds. Remove the dough onto a sheet of plastic wrap. Shape the dough into a disk and wrap well with the plastic. Refrigerate for at least one hour before shaping.
  • Once dough is chilled, preheat the oven to 375F and prepare a 9-inch tart tin. Lightly flour the work surface and rolling pin with flour. Roll the chilled dough into a circle, leaving about 1 to 1 1/2-inches of dough around the edge of the tart tin. Roll the dough onto the rolling pin, then unroll over the tart tin. Gently press the dough into the bottom and sides of the pan, making sure the dough is even all over. Pierce the dough with a fork. If desired, shape the dough scraps into leaves to add to the top of the tart.

For the Tart Filling:

  • For the filling, first spread the apple butter evenly over the tart crust. Using a sharp knife or mandeline slicer to cut the apples very thinly. To arrange the apple slices, fan out 5 to 6 slices at a time and arrange the slices starting from the edge of the tart, working your way in.
  • Prepare the seasonings in a small bowl: combine the lemon juice, cornstarch and spices. Sprinkle the sugar over the apples, then use a pastry brush to brush on the spices.
  • Bake the apple tart in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, until the apples are softened and golden brown. Remove the tart from the oven and let it cool for 15 to 20 minutes before serving. Enjoy with a side of vanilla ice cream or spiced whipped cream.
