In a large mixing bowl, prepare the custard. Whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a separate bowl, make the cinnamon sugar. Combine the brown sugar, white sugar and add a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg, then mix together.
Slice the french bread into 1/2-inch thick slices. First, submerge each slice into the custard until well soaked. Then sprinkle each slice with cinnamon sugar. Layer into a medium-sized baking casserole. Pour any remaining custard over the top and sprinkle with additional cinnamon sugar.
Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden brown on top. Remove from oven and add fresh berries on top, sprinkle with confectioner's sugar and serve with maple syrup.
Optional (but delicious!): for the whipped cream, whisk the chilled heavy cream and sugar on high speed until stiff peaks form. In a separate bowl, cream together the softened cream cheese and maple syrup. Add it to the whipped cream, and whisk until light and fluffy.
